Soft-close hinges and drawer runners: what to specify
Reviewed by Bo, Project Manager at NOVARTE · Updated
Specify hinges and drawer runners by opening, load, access and adjustment. Blum or Hettich can be supplied on request for higher-specification projects.
The practical answer
Specify the opening and load before choosing a soft-close hinge or drawer runner. NOVARTE can supply Blum or Hettich hardware on request and recommends them for higher-specification projects. The exact model, quantity and compatibility belong in the order; this is not a brand ranking or an authorised-dealer claim.
Soft-close is a function, not a complete specification

Based on NOVARTE workshop practice, we review the front size and weight, opening clearance, use and substrate before naming the hinge or runner. A soft-close mechanism slows the closing action; it does not establish load capacity, opening effort or suitability for every cabinet.
The photograph shows drawer storage in a completed residential kitchen. It does not identify the concealed runner brand, model or tested load.
Write these decisions into the order
| Part | Specify | Check on the layout |
|---|---|---|
| Hinge | Exact model, mounting arrangement, opening range, number per door and closing function | Door size and weight, panel thickness, overlay or inset detail and collision with adjacent fronts |
| Drawer runner | Exact model, length, extension, stated load rating and closing/opening function | Usable cabinet depth, drawer construction, expected contents and clearance |
| Lift-up hardware | Front size and weight, operating range, stay or lift mechanism | Ceiling and overhead clearance, reach and safe operation |
| Handleless opening | Grip channel or push-to-open system and any soft-close compatibility | The complete mechanism: do not assume separately selected parts work together |
Blum or Hettich on request
We can supply Blum or Hettich hardware on request, and recommend them for higher-specification projects. Ask for the exact system and item references in the quotation rather than a general brand label.
Availability and compatibility are confirmed for the selected configuration. We do not claim authorised distributorship, brand partnership, universal lifetime coverage or one brand being best for every application. Manufacturer documentation applies to the named product, not to every cabinet using the same brand name.
Check the sample and the installed cabinet
- Open the selected front and drawer with the intended load or an agreed representative check.
- Confirm the final gaps, closing action and adjustment access.
- Record the parts supplied, spare-part identification and agreed care instructions.
- Have the local installer check fixing, alignment and site conditions; a soft-close feature cannot correct an incorrectly installed cabinet.

Common questions
Is soft-close the same as push-to-open?+
No. Soft-close controls closing. Push-to-open releases a front when pressed. If both functions are wanted, specify a compatible complete system rather than assuming two unrelated parts can be combined.
Can you provide Blum or Hettich?+
Yes, on request. We review the selected cabinet and hardware system, then name the actual model and supply scope in the quotation.
How do I choose a drawer load rating?+
Describe what the drawer will hold and its dimensions. Select the runner and drawer construction using the manufacturer’s stated limits for that model, then agree how the assembled unit will be checked.
