Flat-pack or factory-assembled kitchen in Australia: what changes on site?

Reviewed by Bo, Project Manager at NOVARTE · Updated

Flat-pack or factory-assembled kitchen in Australia? Compare what arrives, installer hours, lead times, freight and damage risk before you order.

The practical answer

A flat-pack kitchen arrives as panels that are assembled on site; a factory-assembled kitchen arrives as finished cabinet boxes ready to fix. Yellow Pages’ 2026 guide puts retail flat-pack kitchens at about AUD 4,500–15,000, with installation around AUD 2,800 plus plumbing and electrical work, and CHOICE’s 2024 comparison reports an installer’s lead time of four to six weeks. Factory assembly moves the assembly hours to the factory; the trade-off is more container space.

Published Australian cost references

Yellow Pages’ May 2026 guide gives indicative flat-pack costs of AUD 4,500–15,000 or more and custom kitchens of AUD 15,000–50,000. It also gives an average installation reference of about AUD 2,800, with approximately AUD 1,600 more for plumbing and electrical work. These are the publisher’s market estimates, with different scopes; they are not NOVARTE quotations.

CHOICE’s September 2024 comparison reports an installer’s estimate of around AUD 3,000 for installation, with plumbing, electrical work and splashbacks additional. It also describes a four-to-six-week wait to commence installation in that installer’s example. Treat these as dated references, then obtain current, itemised quotations for your city and layout.

Choose the format around the site

  • A straightforward modular layout can suit flat-pack when someone has the time, tools and skills to assemble it.
  • An irregular layout, coordinated joinery package or repeated room schedule may justify custom factory assembly.
  • Check the largest finished unit against doorways, lifts, stairs and the delivery vehicle before approving it.
  • Confirm service locations, wall condition and final measurements before production. Neither format corrects an inaccurate site survey.

What NOVARTE prepares in Foshan

For an agreed factory-assembled package, we assemble cabinets, fit the specified doors and drawers, review operation and prepare protection and identification for shipment. Ask for item references and photographs linked to the approved drawings rather than accepting a general workshop photo as your own order record.

We can discuss Australian site measurement and local installation arrangements. Where factory installers travel, the country, project scope, team, fees and travel or visa conditions need separate confirmation. Plumbing, electrical and gas work must be allocated to appropriately licensed local trades.

Six questions before ordering

  1. Which units arrive assembled, and which parts are packed separately?
  2. Who checks the final site dimensions and installation tolerances?
  3. Will every box carry a room and drawing reference?
  4. What protection, packing list and shipment photographs are included?
  5. Who handles missing parts or transport damage, and how is it reported?
  6. Who unloads, measures, installs and connects the services locally?

Common questions

Does factory assembly cost more to ship?+

Yes, usually, because assembled cabinets take more container space. For many projects the saving in on-site assembly hours outweighs the extra freight, so compare both in your quotes.

Can an assembled cabinet fit through my doorway?+

Yes, when the packed unit fits the measured delivery route. Check doorways, lifts and stairs before approving large units or the packing arrangement.

How long will installation take?+

Less assembly time than a flat-pack, because the installer skips carcass assembly and goes straight to fixing, levelling and connecting. The total still depends on kitchen size and site readiness.

Can I connect the services myself?+

No. In Australia, plumbing, electrical and gas connections must be done by licensed trades.
